Hairtoy collection: Hairsticks (pic overload!)

Today's post is about the hairsticks in my collection, featuring a shameless pic overload! Hairsticks might be my favourite kind of hairtoy: I think they're versatile, easy to wear when you've got the hang of using them, and look beautiful in updos. What's not to love?

So here are the hairsticks I own to date, including some action shots. I got most of them at Medieval fairs, or on Etsy (it's pretty hard to find hairsticks on regular places, which is a shame). Click or open in new tab for bigger pictures.

1- Not a hairstick per se, but an unused pencil with an owl topper.

2 & 3- A curvy wood hairstick and a straight one with a curvy decorative top I got at a Medieval fair. Curvy hairsticks sometimes work the best for my fine-textured, slippery hair, I've found, although I often use straight sticks as well.

4- A pair of straight wood hairsticks/chopsticks, painted dark red and my very first pair of hairsticks. They hold surprisingly well despite them being really smooth.

5- A German silver hairstick with a spiral top. I also got this at a Medieval fair.

7- A pair of dragonfly-topped white hairsticks which turn bright blue in the Sun. From Aliarose on Etsy. Love them!

8- A gorgeous silver plate and cobalt blue glass hairstick with detachable dangles which I got from Hairjems on Etsy.

9- A green ketylo (curvy hairstick) with a leaf topper. Definitely the most Elven hairstick I own! From Nightblooming on Etsy.

10- A simple pair of straight hairsticks which I got in a New Age/spiritual shop. They work surprisingly well.

12 &13- Curvy light and dark wood hairsticks with decorative metal Celtic knotwork and dragonfly. From a medieval fair.

14- A Victorian-ish stick-fork with an amber crystal I got in a hair swap. It's not very functional for my hair because of the metal material and the length and weight, so I have hardly used it :S

15- A short red and blue wood stick I got as a gift with a purchase from Eaduard Hairsticks on Etsy.

Thor - Frigga's Coronation hair - 1st try

Here's the belated post about my first try at recreating Frigga's Coronation updo from the movie Thor (2011). I described the hairstyle, showed reference pics and posted some potentially helpful videos in this post. 

Like I said in my first Frigga post, I'd like to give this updo another go because there are a couple of things I didn't get as accurate as I'd like (like the fact that Frigga's updo is higher and the fact that the side sections are pinned before the rest of the hair, and not after). However, I also rather like how this first version turned up, so here goes:

• Starting texture:  Heatless bendy rollers curls, as described here.
• Tools:

                        

-Bobby pins. Quite a lot in my case, both open and closed.

-Some decorative pins to pin the separated side sections.

-Elastic to secure the initial anchoring point (medium height half-up in the case of the video tutorial I followed, high ponytail or higher half-up for a higher final bun).

-Some tool to separate sections of hair, if needed.

-I used a plastic hair piece to create a bit more volume in the crown area. For the next time I'm going to go for a donut or an elongated foam hair volumizer piece, because this plastic one got caught in my hair and it was really difficult to take out (ah the days before my using foam donuts xD).

-Optional fixator, like hairspray. I didn't use any in my first try. The pins do keep the curls in shape,  and the hairstyle stayed for quite a while on its own, so I'd maybe go for some just as a light finishing touch or to add more texture in some cases.

• References and method: Screenshots, general description and videos in my first Frigga post. I based this recreation mainly on the last video shown in the post (PrincessHairstyles' Special Ocassion Curly Updo). While I think it's a great starting reference point, I'd like to change a couple of things on my second try in order to make it more accurate to Frigga's updo:  

   -Because Frigga's updo is higher on the head than the one in the tutorial, it would be better to start with a high ponytail (with a donut for more volume) instead of a half-up. Or maybe with a half-up, but higher on the head. A half-up would mean that keeping the nape of the neck polished is a bit more difficult though, and Frigga's nape seems pretty polished, so I think a ponytail would be more accurate (Missy from Doctor Who, for example, wears the back less polished and more textured, so I gof or a half-up in her case).

   -The side sections I pinned at the end, following the tutorial and what I thought was the way to go with Frigga's updo as well. But then I found the reference picture with Frigga wearing her coronation dress with her length down and the side sections pinned up, so those sections would be the first ones to pin.

A long-hair in London: Random hair pics and a hair meet

So now that my master's final project is done (yay!), I'm finally back to my hair blog, this time with some hair pics from my Summer trip to London, including hair-length shots, a braid, and pics from a LHC (Long Hair Community) hair meet :). 

• Starting with a couple of general hair pics, at the Viking and Celtic sections of the British Museum, in the Who Shop with the TARDIS (Whovian here), and before the 221B of the Sherlock BBC series in North Gower St (hardcore Sherlockian here!):

• I took pics of this braid: It started out as a French braid and I pulled the hair into a ponytail halfway through and braided the length with a paranda (I'll post about parandas soon, because Im obsessed about them):

• And finally, my first ever LHC hair meet! The meet was great fun and included length photoshoots, admiring each other hairtoys, playing with each other's hair, food, trees and talking, about hair and other matters.

Only at a hair meet can you smell a hairstick without having people gawking at you xD
