Cosplay styles - Elven ranger high braided ponytail

Another hair cosplay post for today, featuring the style I generally wear for my Elven ranger cosplay and some shots from a 2015 professional shoot by Javier de Cos Lara. It's a high ponytail with a paranda and two side braids with leaf ribbon braided into it, actually very similar to the style I later wore for my warrior Lúthien variation, minus the front volume and flowers.

  • For this style I used:
-Wide-tooth comb and/or gentle brush as needed
-A metal-free elastic for the initial ponytail
-Open pins and/or bobby pins to fix the side braids
-Paranda for the braid
-Leaf ribbon for the side braids
-Hairspray and/or fixing gel as needed

  • Steps:
Initial texture can be straight, wavy or curly as desired. I did some bendy rollers curls in the ends for this style.

1) Side braids: Separate two side pieces of hair and braid them, adding ribbons (in my case, I used leaf ribbons).

3) Braided paranda ponytail:
-Pull the rest of the hair into a high ponytail - mid-height is my preference.
-Add the side braids before securing it with a metal-free elastic. I then fix the side braids to the sides with bobby pins and/or open pins as needed.
-Braid the ponytail, with a paranda for added volume (tutorial also here).

 3) Final touches:
-I use a couple of open bun pics to polish some flyaways at the nape.
-Add aloe vera gel and/or a bit of hairspray to set the style and potential flyaways (if you want), and it's done!

More pics!

Braids - Dutch braids, parandas

Today's post is about braids  - Most pics are belated braid pics from a  few years ago that I haven't uploaded here yet, and one is fairly recent, and the one who prompted this post :)

  • Dutch braids: I'm either better at French braids or it's simply that I've practised those more, but I generally find Dutch braids to be more challenging fo rme, at least at the moment (some people think the opposite). I should definitely practise them more, because I really like how they look.
Pretty much the only Dutch braid pics I have, one of them with a paranda (as you may already know, I use paranda routinely in order to get more hold and volume in my braids):

  • Three-strand braid with paranda - This is the recent pic :) Lately I've been wearing 3-strands with an initial half-up and a flexi-8 at the nape for more hold:

  • Multi-braided style with paranda: For my Elven ranger cosplay back in 2013. As I recall it's two side braids and a French braid with paranda at the back, with the side braids coiled around the base of the French braid and around it:

Hairstyles - Ponytails

This post will be about ponytails, and mainly a picture overload :D. I love the look of high ponytails, and it's one of my usual go-to hairstyles. I generally wear braided ponytails, or ponytails with more than one elastic containing the length, though, because my length can become pretty static-y and tangled. Pics range from late 2011-2015 (click on pics for larger version):

  • The standard high ponytail:
Standard high ponytail with an elastic (preferably one without metal so that the hair doesn't break - So please ignore the pic with the metal-elastic *shudders*). The base can be as high as the top of the head, or as low as the nape (low ponytail). You can also hide the elastic with some hair from the length, or use scrunchies or flexi-8's instead of elastics.

With heatless braidwaves and/or curls:

  • Braided high ponytails:
Can be worn in their own, or with ribbons and/or parandas. I personally favour high braided ponytails with parandas (tutorial here).

Without parandas:

With parandas:

I sometimes add accent braids on the sides, which can make for a more Elvish look:

  • With elastics containing the length:
Helps my hair to remain less tangled and static-y for longer and I like the way it looks :):
